START A MONARCH CLUB IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD: Monarchs are not only miraculous, magical and beautiful, but they are also necessary for our food. Monarchs, like bees, pollinate crops. Due to over-development and pesticides we are losing the habitat that sustains the Monarchs. MONARCHS ARE AN ENDANGERED SPECIES. In 1996 over-wintering Monarchs in Mexico covered approx 45 acres of forest. Today is is less than 2 acres… a little over the size of a football field.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Simply. 1- Plant milkweed. 2- Water your milkweed. 3- Never use any pesticide on your milkweed. (Monarchs get sick from pesticides).  4- Make a ‘Monarch Habitat’ sign & put it next to your milkweed.

PICKY EATERS: Monarchs ONLY lay eggs on milkweed & the caterpillars ONLY eat milkweed leaves.

FACTS Once a caterpillar has eaten all it needs from the milkweed it will crawl away from the plant and look for a suitable spot in which to pupate. In this spot he/she will perform the miracle of rearranging itself from a larva, to crysalis/pupa, to a winged butterfly. ( Do not touch or move the pupa ). Monarchs live approx two weeks, unless they are migrating. They have personalities like any other creature!

EYE WITNESS Last month I saw the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly up close! I named my new friend George The 5th ( a female). Usually it takes 9-14 days to emerge, but George gave me a scare and did not come out until day 17! She emerged in the afternoon so she did not fly until the next day.butterflypagebannergif01                               SEEDS                                                                                     CERTIFICATE
